2011 Old Master Magnum
60% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc
Rose petals, dried black plum, figs and tobacco. A medium bodied wine that is fleshy and savory all at once. High toned perfume emerges with time in the glass. Intense without being too heavy.
2011 was a long cool growing season required extended detail work in the vineyard and resulted in a small crop of intensely flavored berries. Flavor development progressed at lower than normal sugars, leading to densely flavored, balanced wines with slightly lower alcohols than usual. The cooler canopy temperatures made for an aromatic brightness that is unusual in Napa Valley. The varietals were fermented separately in small open top fermenters using indigenous yeast before being drained without pressing to 80% new French oak barrels (Darnajou, Sylvain, Francois Freres) for malolactic fermentation and aging. The barrels were racked twice, once in the spring following malolactic and again at blending in July 2012. We bottled in April 2014.
